French Provincial – a timeless, elegant interior design for Geelong homes

April 29, 2016

There is nothing quite like the timeless interior design style of French Provincial, with its roots in the mid to late 1700s as people in various provinces in France began to emulate the lavish furnishings adorning chateaux and estates. It has a reminiscent quality of a simpler time, of classic beauty with a slight rustic charm.  Recently our Geelong interior design team worked on a brief for a lovely client in the Bellarine Lakes estate, with a focus on a French Provincial style. We worked with the client’s existing furniture, adding in key furniture pieces to highlight this classic interior style.

To enhance the timeless look and feel of the project we worked with soft colours with a mix of texture. Creating a timeless feel by using a lovely linen in both plain and a soft linen and grey plaid, we mixed the fabrics in the living room furniture to create warmth and a French Provincial style.

In the master bedroom we layered the room with a mix of textures in white and soft linen, with a feel of romance and luxury upholstered antique arm chair and bed head, bringing in the warmth of vintage wood and a sense of history. Our client especially loved the drama of the large ornate white painted edged mirror that echoed the sense of the past.

We used a beautiful padded linen bed head to tie back to the arm chair and drapes in the guest bedroom to bring a touch of luxury and timeless romance often found throughout the French provinces. With a highlight of soft blues and butterfly imagery the sky and nature is bought into the room.

To bring a touch of the industrial wrought iron so often found in the French Provincial style we used a set of stunning rustic timber and black iron bar stools in the kitchen, completing the look.

To further complement the beautiful interior styling of this Geelong district home we used white plantation shutters in the master bedroom and living room.

This style combines ornate furnishings with fine linens and gentle tones to create an elegant and sophisticated look that, when done right, can work as well in a modern setting as it can in the most ornate of historic abodes. The French Provincial interior style is one that works well combining existing furniture creating subtle changes within your home to create the timeless interior design you have been longing for.
