WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING ARTWORK

Art work on your walls can make your home sing; create warmth or a certain mood to your interior design and offer a welcome injection of colour. Choosing art for your home is very personal and one that doesn’t necessarily happen in one day; art work is to be collected over time and often there is meaning behind each piece that you own; there is no right or wrong however here are some helpful guidelines to consider:

  • This can sometimes be over whelming for people as there are so many things to take into account. Size of the artwork, design and visual look and appeal. I always believe in exploring whats out there in the market, what colours do you want to bring into the room and what mood do you want to create.
  • You will gravitate to certain looks, colours & styles that appeal. Don’t rush into purchasing artwork. Ask if you can take the artwork home on apro so you can see it in the room or the company may allow you to take a photo so you can visualise it that way.
  • Artwork selection is not something I rush into its important for me to create the right mood in the rooms I style and make the spaces come alive. I would rather clients walk into spaces that have personality than walk into spaces that feel dull and cold.
  • Geelong has some wonderful local contemporary art galleries which are a great place to start when looking for that special piece that inspires you. Local art galleries often showcase local artists who’s subjects may share some meaning to you are your life and the places/ things you love. I love to explore the regular exhibitions at Geelong‘s Boom Gallery and Metropolis Gallery both with their unique stable of local and national artists.

RULES OF THUMB:

  • Don’t hang your artwork higher than eye level. Artwork should be hung at eye level and not higher as it will become unbalanced.
  • Avoid over cluttering the walls with artwork. There is a saying less is best.
  • Buy what you can afford
  • Look at artwork that creates a mood and works in with the look you are creating. You may have French inspired interiors so you wouldn’t put a large scale retro print on the wall, keep with your theme and gravitate to what you love not what’s always in vogue.
  • Try not to use small artwork in large rooms.
  • Use the right scale artwork in each room to create statements and balance.

Enjoy choosing your unique artwork and enjoy the new sense of space and energy it creates in your home.
